I am so incredibly grateful for Emily! She truly goes above and beyond. The first time I went into see her was in August of 2021. My son was 3 weeks old and I went in because of immense nipple pain/damage (my nipples were completely destroyed). It turned out my son had both a lip and tongue tie. In addition to that, I also had nipple vasospasm which the pain was almost worse than my bleeding nipples. Every time I finished nursing, came out the shower, or was cold I got severe nipple pain that felt like pins and needle. Emily helped heal my nipples and she walked me through nipple vasospasm so I wouldn’t have to suffer with that pain as well. I was able to breastfeed for 10 months!
Then in January 2023, I had another baby but no longer lived in Arizona and was so sad I wasn’t going to be able to see Emily. Once I gave birth I immediately wanted to know if my daughter had a lip/tongue tie because I knew there was a high chance she would. I had 2 different lactation consultants review her (one was an IBCLC) and both said she didn’t have anything. 3 weeks in I still had horrible nipple damage that only seemed to be getting worse. I reached out to Emily for help and she was so helpful, she made time to see us last minute! We traveled to AZ from CA for a weekend to have her see us and it turned out my daughter also had both a lip and tongue tie. It’s now been one week since her ties were released, my nipples are 75% healed and our nursing sessions are thriving! I truly cannot thank Emily enough. She’s extraordinary at what she does and she is passionate about it to help every client uniquely.
I started working with Emily right after my daughter was born. I had trouble with my milk not coming in after birth, and we also found out that she had a lip and tongue tie. After these were released, we tried everything Emily could think of to improve my supply, but it seems my body was being stubborn. When we started, I was pumping for 30 minutes and getting 5-10ml total. With months of trial and error, and medication, I was able to up that yield to 1-2 ounces per session! My daughter is almost 7 months now and while we are still supplementing with donor milk, we are still breastfeeding! Emily never gave up hope that I could breastfeed, even though I was borderline a few times. She is patient and always kind. We loved seeing her every week and I am so thankful for her support! Definitely, definitely recommend!
Forever grateful,
Lisa and Chloe
I cannot speak highly enough of Emily’s support, care, guidance and expertise. Our baby struggled to breastfeed in his first weeks of life and at 6 weeks stopped eating completely. After seeking support from our pediatrician’s office (which was essentially a deadend) I connected with Arizona Breastfeeding Medicine and Wellness and Emily Barnes. At this time, my baby was diagnosed with a severe tongue tie, which we revised 2 weeks later. This began a long and arduous process to get him “back to the breast.” Emily made multiple visits to my house and provided support in between visits by text message. I had A LOT of questions and she answered all of them without any judgment. She got to know my baby and my family and helped us through the most difficult part of our early parenting journey. This was not an easy situation to address and Emily developed lots of creative solutions. At times, she was kneeling over me or hiding behind the couch to syringe milk into my baby´s mouth. After several weeks, he finally started to breastfeed. It never got easy for us, but I was able to feed him with a combination of breastfeeding and pumped milk until he was 10 months old. He turns 1 in two weeks, and I still nurse him in the morning. I am so grateful to Emily for her support along the way. She was a kind, caring and knowledgeable force as well as a friend during a very difficult and isolating time, and I can honestly say, we couldn’t have done it without her.
It has always been my main goal to exclusively breastfeed my son, who is also my first child. I struggled with pain and discomfort since the first time he latched in the hospital. Nurses and hospital lactation showed no concern for the pain I was experiencing or the damage that was happening to my nipples. I was told by various people that this was “normal” and that my nipples would toughen up with time. The amount of pain was worse than labor itself and I knew this couldn’t be right. By the time I found Emily, my son was a week old and my nipples looked like they had been attacked by a cheese grater. It turned out that he had a lip and tongue tie and we were able to have them revised on our first visit in office. I don’t know where I would be (or what shape my nipples would be in) if it weren’t for Emily. She has been extremely supportive of our journey and has helped me persevere throughout this process when I was losing hope and feeling defeated. She has truly been the light at the end of the tunnel for us. My little one is going on one month of being fed only my breastmilk and I have Emily to thank for that. I now look forward to many more months, and maybe even years of nourishing my sweet boy. If you’re struggling with your journey or are in need of quality advice or guidance, I strongly recommend that you see Emily!
My goal was to breastfeed for at least a year with my beautiful daughter, but due to complications with my milk supply, that goal was almost out of reach. Thanks to Emily, she made this an actual possibility. Despite all of my individual efforts at home to boost supply, nothing was working. With tons of guidance and patience, Emily helped me get to where I needed with my supply, and my daughter up in birth weight. If it wasn’t for her, I would’ve given up months ago. Now I see no end in sight on our breastfeeding journey. Thank you Emily!
Words cannot express the gratitude and amazement I have for Emily! My daughter Leilani was struggling with breastfeeding and was not at her birth weight 2 weeks after her birth, I thought I had no choice but to use formula even though I wanted to breastfeed my first child. But after meeting with Emily and following her advice and support Leilani exceeded her birth weight and is growing more and more each day with breast feeding. Emily was instrumental in my daughters progress and growth and her sincerity and passion each time we have seen her lets me know my husband and I made the best decision for our daughter by working with Emily. Not only is she fully attentive during all our appointments, she is always responsive to any questions or concerns we had outside of our appointments and I always felt comfortable and could trust her recommendations. Without Emily, my daughter would not be thriving and as happy as she is now. So if you are struggling with breastfeeding, do yourself and your child a favor and contact Emily!
From her initial referral out for suspected tongue and lip ties, to helping with baby's early bowel movements, to our most recent battle of nightmare clogged ducts, Megan has been a fantastic help every step of this crazy breastfeeding journey! Every obstacle has felt super tricky with a number of variables, and logistical issues that have made it hard to navigate moving forward. However, Megan has not only helped us work through this during appointments, she has also been on call during non working hours and ready to help. I can't imagine how we would have fared without her help!
I have been working with Megan through my challenging breastfeeding journey dealing with severe tongue tie, latch troubles, oversupply and fast letdown that my baby struggled to cope with. Megan honestly could not have been more amazing at guiding me through this process as a first time breastfeeding mom, helping me stay positive, and troubleshooting to overcome these issues! She texted me day and night, made last minute appts whenever I needed, and supported me so much. I honestly probably would not have powered through and stuck with breastfeeding if it wasn’t for her!! I cannot recommend her enough- she is AMAZING!
I was experiencing some pain after successfully breastfeeding my son for the first couple weeks. Emily was very helpful in diagnosing the issue and giving me the information and tools to fix it. Within a few days of implementing her suggestions the pain was completely gone. She continues to go above and beyond as a provider by not only answering all of my questions with knowledgeable, researched based information but frequently checking in to make sure everything is going well. Being in the medical field myself as well as a first time mom, I really appreciate her approach and her strong desire for helping women provide the best possible nutrition to their babies. I will definitely use her as my lactation consultant for all my future children and highly recommend her services.
I met Emily when I was a few months along with my twins. While pregnant Emily helped answer all of my questions. After I delivered, Emily was there with the post partum answers as well. Breastfeeding was hard for me due to low supply and latch issues, she gave me the resources to get both my kids checked for tongue and lip ties. It turned out they had both. After revisions with a specialist, and many late night texts, we got the hang of it. I nursed for a little over a year before my children both self weaned. Without Emily's help I would have given up after all the issues, she helped me relax and get the information I needed to help make my breastfeeding journey so much more enjoyable. I know with any future baby she will be the first I go to for lactation help!
Emily and I were close friends as well as coworkers at the time I had my son and she was also the most supportive & patient person I could have ever come across. She never once hesitated to answer any questions and helped me when I needed it most (which was quite frequent, at first :) ). Emily always provided me with her time, her resources, ideas and suggestions to keep this new mama motivated to continue trying. She absolutely refused to give up on me, even though I gave up on myself... If it wasn't for her, I would have given up breastfeeding much sooner and I wouldn't have never seen success become of it. I will 100% utilize her again, for my next birth and completely recommend her for anyone who has any questions, or needs help because you think breastfeeding is just not fit for you. It is! You can do it! Emily will help you succeed!
Emily and I were coworkers when I got pregnant with my second child, my daughter, she asked me if I was going to breastfeed. I told her about my experience with my son, and how I had no help or clue what I was doing. Emily encouraged me to give it another try with my daughter, and shes been there every step of the way with me. There were times my daughter wasn't latching, I was not producing enough milk, I had to go back to work and, was not comfortable with nursing in public. My daughter is now 1 1/2 and there are no words to describe the overwhelming feelings of joy and love as you hold your child while they nurse. Thank you Emily for being so supportive, and being there for me. You’re Fabulous!!!
